Apapa Customs Intercepts N1.3bn Tramadol, Hands Over to NDLEA

Operatives of the Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Thursday announced the interception of N1.3bn worth of tramadol.
The drugs found in 1×20ft Container No. SUDU-7538656 were concealed as 272 cartons of stainless steel hotpot.
The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Malanta Yusuf, at a news briefing with journalists said the drugs were declared as “cooking appliances, measuring/checking instruments and furnace burners to evade arrest”.
However, on examination, “55 cartons of Tramadol concealed in food flasks with a Duty Paid Value of N1.375 billion”, were discovered, according to a statement from the Customs.
Yusuf said the seizure was in keeping with the provisions of sections 46 &47 of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap 45, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The Area Controller said, “It is pertinent to reiterate our resilience in ensuring that importation of such illicit hard drugs are detected, seized and handed over to the appropriate agency for further regulatory action. Furthermore, I would like to use this medium to advise importers/agents to acquaint themselves with import and export prohibition guidelines to safeguard the nation’s economy and security.”
The seized items were later handed over to the Narcotics, Apapa Special Area Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Among the items in the 1x20ft container include 81 cartons of 250mg and 69 cartons of 225mg of tramadol tablets.
