How Shippers’ Council Recovered N1.9bn for Importers, Exporters, by Jime
The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Hon. Emmanuel Jime, has said that the Council’s intervention led to the recovery of N1,90,5001,160.70 for Nigerian importers and exporters from shipping service providers.
Jime said this was achieved through mediation after receiving 618 complaints from the shippers between 2021 and March 2022.
The NSC CEO who disclosed this during his media parley to mark his one year in office said N1, 072, 008, 040.90 was recovered in 2021, N18, 493, 961.70k in the first quarter of 2022 .
He said that the recovery was made after the Council investigated the complaints.
He added that the Complaints Unit of the Council was involved in the mediation which led to the success recorded in the recovery.
Jime assured that the Council as the ports economic regulator will continue to play mediation roles in the industry, adding that in so doing, the Council will be fair to all concerned.
He added that the Council was determined to achieve efficiency in the sector.
According to him, the target of the Council was to ensure that shipping in Nigeria is carried out according to global best practices.
He also disclosed that the Council shall be holding its 16th edition of the International Maritime Seminar for Judges in Abuja from Tuesday 5th – Thursday 7th July, 2022 .
This year’s seminar will be focusing on creating a platform for Justices/Judges of various courts who are drawn from Nigeria and West African sub-region to be enriched with the requisite jurisprudence.
Such experience will enable them address the challenges of interpretation and application of both domestic and international maritime law principles necessary for settling maritime disputes.
