Commission Sends 400 Monitors to Check Police Behaviour During Election
*As 14 die of stampede at APC rally in PH
The Police Service Commission (PSC) will today send 400 monitors to the 36 states of the country to monitor the behavior of policemen during the presidential election.
In a statement from the Head, Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Mr Ikechukwu Ani, the monitors will issue guidelines to police officers on how to behave during the election.
“The Commission Monitors will be armed with its guidelines for the conduct of Officers on electoral duty and the Officers’ conduct during the elections will be assessed based on the guidelines.
“The Commission has also procured dedicated telephone lines for all the States of the Federation where the electorates and other citizens can access its Monitors to complain or commend the conduct of the Police, the lead security Agency, for the elections”.
The statement said dedicated phone lines and twitter handles have been provided for updates during the election.
The Chairman of the PSC, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, who will coordinate the exercise said the Commission wants police officers on electoral duties to maintain peaceful atmosphere during the exercise.
Meanwhile, 14 persons were said to have died during the presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari at the Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The 14 persons died as a result of stampede at the gate of the stadium.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the incident said eight other persons were injured and receiving treatment.
