Head of Research in the organization, Dr. Eugene Nweke, in a statement described women in the maritime industry as having contributed immensely in advancing the maritime industry development.

Nweke however called on women in the maritime industry to actively work together to create a more inclusive and diverse industry.

He said that while doing this, they should demand change and push for policies supporting women’s empowerment.

Part of the statement reads:
“As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, I am reminded of the remarkable women I’ve had the privilege to work with in the maritime industry. Their dedication, expertise, and perseverance inspire me, and I am honored to join the Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) in celebrating their achievements.

“We recognize the vital roles women play in advancing the maritime sector and acknowledge the challenges they’ve overcome in a traditionally male-dominated field. By actively supporting and mentoring one another, women in maritime have created a ripple effect of positive change, driving innovation, progress, and inclusivity.

“As we celebrate these achievements, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering the next generation of women in maritime. We will actively work to break down barriers, challenge biases, and create opportunities for women to succeed. We believe in their abilities and are committed to supporting their growth and development.

“Women in maritime embody the pioneering spirit, pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons. They are role models for women and girls everywhere, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, they can succeed in any field. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re reminded that the momentum for change is unstoppable. Together, we’ll continue to drive progress and create a brighter future for all.

We call on women in maritime to:

– Actively work together to create a more inclusive and diverse industry
– Demand change and push for policies supporting women’s empowerment
– Celebrate each other’s achievements and support one another in pursuing excellence

“Finally, we urge women in maritime to develop a robust mentorship succession program to address the impending age gap in the next decade”.
