The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Thursday called for unity among maritime journalists and freight forwarders in the nation’s shipping industry.
Adeniyi was concerned about the proliferation of different associations of journalists covering the maritime beat, and was of the view that there should be one umbrella group of journalists covering the beat under the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The CGC spoke on the occasion of the award dinner organised by Nigerian Maritime Journalists to honour him in recognition of his excellent performance in office.
He however appreciated that the maritime journalists were able to come together under one body to give him the honour, adding that it was an opportunity to truly come together.
Adeniyi promised that he will use his good offices to appeal to other Chief Executive Officers of agencies in the maritime to have an insurance cover for the journalists on the condition that all the associations come together.
He also said there were lots of benefits that the maritime journalists will gain for coming together.
Adeniyi while noting that there are different associations of freight forwarders also appealed to the practitioners to come together under one umbrella.
He said it was better to have a united voice of freight forwarders in the industry than what the situation has been over the years.
On his award, the CGC was full of appreciation to the maritime journalists for considering him for the honour
The award was organized by the League of Maritime Editors (LOME), Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Maritime Media Association of Nigeria (OMMAN) and Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP), as well as those who do not belong to any association.
The former National President of Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) and Chairman of Skelas Group, Prince Olayiwola Shittu, who chaired the event held at Lagos Airport Hotels, also said he was pleased that Adeniyi has performed exceedingly well since he assumed office.
Shittu also commended Adenyi for listening to the appeal of freight forwarders by suspending the implementation of 4 percent Free-on-Board (FOB) value on imports.
Nigerian Maritime Journalists decided to come together to honour the Customs CG as the “Iconic Maritime Personality of the year 2024″ in consideration of his excellent performance since he was appointed.
They believe that CG Adeniyi has registered sterling and excellent performance since assumption of office as the Customs CGC.
These include unprecedented revenue collection, anti-smuggling activities, trade facilitation, national security, staff welfare, inter-agency collaboration, infrastructural upgrade, Information and Communication Technology, and Corporate Social Responsibility, among others.
