The Controller of the Tin Can Island Ports Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Frank Onyeka, has restated his commitment not just to meet but to surpass the revenue target given to his Command for the year.
Onyeka also assured that his Command is committed to promoting trade facilitation in line with the objectives of the Service headed by Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The Comptroller who spoke during a courtesy visit to his Command by members of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN), also stressed his belief in ensuring transparency and collaboration.
He said that collaboration and transparency in customs operations were very imperative.
Onyeka, however, explained that every trade has to be legitimate.
He told MARAN members, “I will facilitate trade, but it has to be legitimate trade. That’s what I feel I should do in the strict sense.
“You know, I am coming from the aspect of revenue. So, it is my prayer and my hope to meet my target.
“But principally, what I am going to fight is the ability to do this job without examination. I have appealed to my officers, whatever it is they have to do, let them see the containers, once we’ve examined them, everything should be on cruise control because if you examine, you will now know if it’s supposed to go out or not.
“I have involved Customs Intelligence Unit, CIU, I have involved Valuation Unit, I’ve spoken to all relevant Units, and it is my prayer, by the grace of God, that all of us will be on the same page to make sure that the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is brought to fruition.”
The Controller expressed appreciation to the Customs Comptroller Genera, Adeniyi, for the trust given to him to serve, assuring the he will not let him down.
Oneyka said, “I also appreciate the fact that our Comptroller General Of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for whom I’m very grateful. He needs to know that he didn’t make any mistake in bringing me here. “I am very grateful to him and his management team, and I need to make him proud.”
The Controller commended his predecessor, Deraa Nnadi, who is now Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) for his achievements while in Tin Can.
He particularly praised Nnadi for his excellence in “anti-smuggling operations, revenue generation and infrastructural development”.

Oneyka was quoted saying, “In anti-smuggling, he did well. In revenue generation, he did superbly well, same goes for infrastructural development.
“His public relations were top-notch, which I’m going to leverage on. He was fortunate to have what I consider a very fantastic rapport with the media because that’s his background. I intend to leverage on that. I intend to do better in that aspect,”
During the visit, the President of MARAN, Godfrey Bivbere, said his association is committed to collaborating with the Command in areas of trade facilitation and revenue goals.
The MARAN President said, “We remain committed to giving Comptroller Onyeka the same support we gave to his predecessor.”
