The prevailing economic crisis in the country may have taken a toll on professionalism. It appears professionals no longer care about ethics of the profession and indeed anything conscience in a desperate bid to make money.
As revered as the medical profession is with many parents wishing to have their children become doctors, apparently because of its importance in the society, the profession is currently being bastardized by some get-rich quick new generation doctors.
This is in a bid to make easy money. Over the years, the issue about the profession is that many hospitals would not care watching their patients die if they do not have money to prepay for their medical bills. But worse is the latest trend in which some young professionals now allegedly fake test results in order to make more money from such treatment. This was what happened to a patient in Lagos recently. The patient (names withheld) had fallen sick and gone to a hospital in Idimu area of Lagos. While there, he had complained of stomach ache. The hospital decided to conduct a test which result they faked. The patient was told that he has cancer of the stomach in two places, the upper and lower abdomen. He was billed N5m to carry out the operation. The patient was full of lamentations over the test result, but was assured that the stage of the cancer was such that the operation would remove it. But the issue was raising the money. He went into negotiation for some weeks before the hospital agreed to accept N2m for the operation. However, before the treatment, the patient decided to narrate his ordeal to another doctor who worships with him in the same Church. After hearing from him, the doctor advised that he should visit him for another test, insisting that cancer is not just treated in the way the first hospital had claimed. The patient took the advice and went for the test. Surprisingly, the test result showed that the patient was free from any cancer as against the claim by the first hospital. This was how the patient was saved the trauma of what would have been a fake surgery and extortion.
Now, a senior lawyer close to the family has threatened to drag the hospital which is located around Orisubare road, Idimu, Lagos, to court. But the patient is yet to make up his mind on this, arguing that it was God that saved him in the first place from the hands of the yahoo doctors. But the lawyer is mounting pressure on the family to expose the hospital for the sake of innocent Nigerians whose lives may have been ruined by such yahoo doctors.
