Customs Sets Up Special Squad to Tackle Smuggling of Petroleum Products

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi has inaugurated a special tactical team, Operation Whirlwind as part of the efforts to tackle the menace of petroleum smuggling.
.Known as Operation Whirlwind, the team is tasked with combating the smuggling of petroleum products to neighboring countries.

In his opening remarks, CGC Adeniyi emphasized the crucial role Operation Whirlwind will play in safeguarding the nation’s economy from the adverse effects of petroleum smuggling. “Economic saboteurs must be brought to justice,” he declared.
He said, “Over the years, we have rebuilt the service to an enviable height, our revenue is increasing, and our targets have also increased. However, if we are not significantly impacting the Nigerian economy, then we must do better.”

The workshop, held at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College (NCCSC), is designed to equip the Operation Whirlwind team with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively curb smuggling. The team will undergo rigorous training to enhance their operational capabilities and ensure they are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of petroleum smuggling.

Adeniyi stressed the need for collaboration and unity among the officers, emphasizing that they were selected for their ability to do the job. He warned of serious consequences for anyone who acts against the mission, emphasizing that the team’s success depends on their collective efforts.

The Director of Legal Services will provide the team with comprehensive guidance on the proper procedures for filing seizures, ensuring that all legal aspects of their operations are handled correctly.

Operation Whirlwind marks a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against smuggling and economic sabotage. With the launch of this special task force, the Nigeria Customs Service is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the nation’s economy and ensuring that economic saboteurs are brought to justice.
