Shippers’ Council to Suspend Implementation of 600% Increase in Terminal Charges
*Jime says increase being reviewed
The Nigeria Shippers’ Council is to suspend the implementation of the 600 percent increase in storage charges granted to terminal operators.
The Executive Secretary of the Council, Hon Emmanuel Jime made the promise on Monday during a meeting with members of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF).
Noting that there was a mistake somewhere, he promised that the ports economic regulator will review the increase.
The freight forwarders had protested the increase, adding that it has a lot of bad economic consequences.
Jime while acknowledging the pains the hike in charges may cause to the freight forwarders, said due process will be followed in the negotiating of the increase.
He promised to reach out to the terminal operators for the review of the increase.
Jime was said to have admitted that the Council did not involve the customs brokers during the consultation for the increase for the terminal charges by the concessionaires.
He was quoted saying, “There were certain steps that were not proper; so we will review them immediately.
“I’ll make sure that we re-engage the process in a way that will meet the needs and expectations of stakeholders in the industry.
“I have personally discovered that our internal mechanism has not been properly implemented in order for us to arrive at the decision that we made.
“We made that decision, I cannot deny it, but the decision was made on the basis of some information that was provided by certain people. We’ll review the decision”
The freight forwarders said what pained them was not the increase but the high rate of the increase.
Jime assured that the increase would be suspended until all stakeholders sit at a table to agree on the rate.
