NSC Moves to Tackle Shipping Service Providers on Container Deposit, Hijack

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) is angry with shipping service providers over failure to keep with the agreement on container deposit.
The shipping companies are being accused of pocketing container deposits paid by shippers even after the empty containers have been returned.
The ports economic regulator identified various infractions such as container hijacking and container deposit & refund against the service providers.
The Council lamented that these infractions attract more costs to the shipper, and hamper on efficiency and effectiveness of the port industry.

To address the problem, the NSC management will be meeting the shipping service providers on Tuesday in Lagos.
The meeting is scheduled to hold at the headoffice of the Council.
A notice to the meeting reads: “The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), has observed various infractions such as Container Hijacking and Container Deposit & Refund. These infractions attract more costs to the shipper, and hamper on efficiency and effectiveness of the port industry.
“Shippers’ Council in a bid to address these and other issues has scheduled a meeting of service providers and users. This forum is to enable discussions with a view to proffering solutions to them.”
