The Shippers Association of Lagos State (SALS) has been hit by crisis as the former President, Rev. Jonathan Nicole, has dragged the present executive of the association to court.
Sources said Nicole who left office about a year ago also joined the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) in the court action.
It was gathered that Nicole wants the court to nullify the election of the executive members on the allegation that they defaulted in payment of two years annual subscription to the association.
Nicole and other applicants, it was gathered, are seeking the power of the court to be returned to conduct election.
But a source close to the association claimed that Nicole lied on the issue of non-payment of annual subscription.
The source also alleged that Nicole “is not a shipper in the first place nor paid his annual subscription up to date.(2years)”.
The source said Nicole joined NSC on the claim that the agency has no right to intervene in the affairs of the SALS.
It was gathered that NSC had played a role in ensuring that an election be held in the association for a new executive following the expiration of the Nicole’s executive.
The source said of Nicole, “This is a man that unlawfully elongated his tenure for over 6 years. His tenure expired since 2016 but he refused to conduct election.
“He claims that NSC has no power to intervene.
This is a man who claims to be a maritime guru but erroneously claiming that the Port Economic regulator who performs both mediatory and alternative resolution services cannot provide forum to address anomalies in SALS”
The source added, “The applicants were elected as president and vice president of shippers association Lagos State in 2014 along with other executive members for a two (2) year tenure. On expiration of the tenure 2016 the applicants refused to conduct election and in consequence unlawfully elongated their tenure till March 2022 when all the members cried to Nigeria Shippers Council, port Economic regulator for mediation as all other executive members elected with applicants stopped coming to meeting in protest for a long time”.
Efforts to speak to Nicole on the matter failed as he could not be reached on phone.
