Sambo, Hassan Bello Among Recipients of Special National Honours by Buhari
Outgoing Transportation Minister, Alhaji Muazu Jaji Sambo and former Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Hassan Bello, are among the 340 Nigerians who were conferred with special honours award by the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari.
Sambo was conferred with the award of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) while Bello received the award of the Officer of the Order of Niger (OON).
Both were recognized for their contributions in the areas where they have served the country.
Sambo is seen by the Maritime industry stakeholders as deserving the award have achieved so much in less than 10 months of his stay in the Transportation industry.
Apart from encouraging the war against piracy by the Nigerian Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) under deep blue sea project, among others, Sambo was able to secure the approval from the President for the disbursement of Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) after close to 20 years of the suspension of the Ship Acquisition and Ship Building Fund (SASBF).
Maritime industry stakeholders also applauded Buhari for recognizing Bello who also achieved so much while in the NSC.
Bello turned Shippers’ Council from just protecting the interest shippers into full blown port economic regulator under which it championed increased ports efficiency by encouraging automation involving both providers and consumers of shipping services.
Bello while in office fought against arbitrary charges by both terminal operators and multinational shipping companies.
It was for this development that the shipping service providers dragged the NSC to court, challenging their powers and some of the policies introduced to check arbitrary charges.
The service providers lost the case in both High and Appeal Courts before heading to the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Sambo according to his media aides had in reaction to the honour said, “This honour at this point in the history of our nation, fills my heart with sincere gratitude, not only to me as a person, but a reflection of the tireless efforts and dedication of our team towards the progress and development of our dear nation particularly in the transportation sector within this short time.
“My profound gratitude goes to the President Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, and my colleagues in the cabinet for their unwavering support and guidance at all times.
“Also, my heartfelt appreciation goes to our hard-working civil servants in the Federal Ministry of Transportation ecosystem and its Agencies, this is a testament to our collective efforts, and commitment to purpose. This honour is much as theirs as it is mine. Thank you for your professionalism and active participation in delivering on our mandate. The “low-hanging fruits” paid off after all.
“May the new government usher in unending prosperity for us as individuals and as a nation at large. May the legacies we have built endure”.
