Smugglers trading hemp supplies may have miscalculated when they chose the evening of April 21 for the passage of their goods.
It was around 4pm in the evening of Friday, a holiday, when perhaps the smugglers may have thought they would have a safe passage.
But they were unlucky as the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (Seme Command) still had an eagle eye on possible smuggling points.
According to the Area Controller, Seme Command of the Customs, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, the smugglers were not lucky as four of them were arrested with 553 parcels of Cannabis Sativa worth N10 million.
Nnadi disclosed that the seized items were destined for Kaduna state.
Giving details of the seizure concealed in a bus with registration number, EPE 622 YC, along the Abidjan – Lagos Corridor, Badagry, at 4pm , the Controller said: “Upon search of the bus, seven large sacks containing 553 parcels of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp, were discovered.
“Also, four male occupants of the vehicle, comprising of two civilians and two members of one of the sister security agencies conveying the contraband items were arrested.
“The contraband narcotics worth about N10 million and the means of conveyance were taken to the station at Seme and detained, pending further investigations.
“Also taken to the station are the four male suspects who have volunteered statements.
“However, the two members of one of the sister security agency were handed over to their agency for further necessary action.
“Preliminary investigation following the questioning of the suspects revealed that the Indian hemp was destined for Kaduna State.”
Nnadi shortly after the seizure urged the officers of the Command to always be alert during Sallah and other celebrations, as smugglers could take advantage of public holidays to commit economic crime.
He pointed out the health of such drugs and the crime it contributes in the society.
