How We Hit N1,022trn Revenue Record in 2022, by Apapa Customs Controller

The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has explained how it was able to hit the revenue record of N1.022trillion between January and December 2022.
The Area Controller, Comptroller Yusuf Malanta, told newsmen in Apapa on Thursday the revenue figure was 16.07% higher than figure for the previous year which was N870,388,340,650.
He pointed out increase in export trade as well as inter-agency collaboration as among the factors.
For instance, he disclosed that non-oil exports recorded in the port were 6.4 million metric tonnes.
According to him, “On export trade, in line with the Federal Government diversification of the economy in non-oil export, the command recorded a total of $68.5 million Free on board (FOB) value with a naira equivalent of N28.2 billion of non-oil commodities with a total tonnage of 6.4 million Metric tonnes exported through Apapa port.”
He identified Items exported through Apapa Port as “steel bars, agricultural produce such hibiscus, sesame seeds, cocoa, cashew nuts, ginger, soya beans, and mineral products,”
On inter-agency collaboration, he said that this helped in increasing productivity of the Command.
According to him, there was “inter-agency collaboration, networking, incidence profiling, information gathering/processing, and experience shared” led to some a lot of interventions of dangerous imports.
Noting that there were challenges, he however added that the Command was able to record laudable achievements.
He disclosed that the use of technology played important part in revenue collection and anti-smuggling operations and export promotion,
The Command seized a total of 157 containers which duty paid value (DPV) was N14.4 billion last year as against 102 containers with DPV of N31.8 billion seized in the previous year (2021).
Among the items seized were codeine syrup, foreign parboiled rice, vegetable oil, processed/unprocessed wood and used clothing.
The Command had arrested 60 suspects in connection with some of the seizures while some escaped unhurt expect for the loss of their goods.
