Operatives of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have announced interception of 15 trailers of 50kg bags of rice and other goods worth N1.021bn for the month of November.
The 15 trailers had 8,999 50 kg bags of foreign parboiled rice.
Other items seized according to the Acting Controller, Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu who briefed newsmen include 85,300 litres of PMS, 812 pieces of used tyres, 40ft container of STC charcoal, 20 ft container of 4,004 cartons of tomatoe parts, 5 units of used Tokunbo vehicles.
Similarly 40 cartons of 4 and 5 literes of vegetable oil, 128 parcels of Inidan hemp, 13 cartons of knock out, 243 bales of used clothing, 2,976 cartons of new shoes and 37 cartons of used poultry were also seized.
He said 14 suspects have been arrested for different offences during the period under review, adding that 13 were released on administrative bail while one is in custody.
He also disclosed that the Unit collected N43m through issuance of demand notices on identified shortfalls in duty payment.
Ejibunu said the collected revenue would have been lost through different modes of duty evasion such as undervaluation, under-declaration , application of wrong harmonized system codes and false declaration but for the meticulous oversight and prevention as a layer of checks.
He warned smugglers and their collaborators to stop their illegal activities or face the wrath of the Customs.
“As the year draws to a close, let me reiterate our warning to smugglers, intending smugglers and their collaborators, that FOU Zone A would watch, remain active and vigilant at all times. We shall vigorously go after them wherever they travel through, or store smuggled items, even if the smuggled goods are stored in their bedrooms, we shall lawfully swoop on them. It is an ongoing battle that we shall not relent on”.
