Sambo, Haastrup, Nweke Mourn Otunba Kunle Folarin
The Honourable Minister of transportation, Engr. Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, has joined maritime stakeholders in mourning the Chairman, Nigeria Port Consultative Forum (NPCF), Otunba Kunle Folarin, who died few days ago after a brief illness.
Similarly, the Chairman, Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN), Princess Vicky Haastrup also Thursday commiserated with the family of late Otunba Folarin who died in Lagos on Tuesday at the age of 82.
Reacting to the news of his death, the Minister said the “Nation has lost a maritime repository of knowledge, an experienced maritime practitioner, a voice of the ideal, a highly cerebral gentleman and most importantly, a friend”.
According to a statement by the Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister
(Media & Publicity), Sam Idiagbonya, the Minister is saddened by the news of his passing.
The Minister was quoted saying, “ there was a lot in the pipeline through the ingenuity of this intellectual doyen that will further enhance the dynamics of operation in the country’s maritime sector, and in honour of his memory he will ensure they are brought to fruition”. Every moment of his life was dedicated to improving the maritime sector, either in passing down knowledge or being a constructive critic to ensure the ideals are upheld in the sector. He served well and lived well.
“May the Almighty Allah repose his soul and grant the family he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss” the Honourable Minister said.
In a statement released by the association on Thursday, the STOAN Chairman described the late Otunba Folarin as a “maritime colossus” who made “significant impact” across various sections of the maritime industry.
Princess Haastrup said, “I am truly saddened by the death of this great man. Otunba Kunle Folarin’s exit at this time will create a great vacuum in the maritime community. “He was an accomplished maritime expert and administrator, and a repository of maritime knowledge. His death will be felt far beyond the maritime industry,” Haastrup said
The President of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, Dr Eugene Nweke, also said that the demise of Otunba Folarin leaves a very big vacuum too big to be ignored.
Nweke said, “ Otunba as a chairman of a session or an event, you will be sure coordination. Otunba as an analyst, you will be sure of in-dept, with instances. Otunba as a resources person, you will be sure that the event theme goes beyond the expectations of the organisers. Otunba, as public policy advocate, you will be sure that superiority of argument and constructive delivery takes a centre stage. For, in all of these, shall Otumba be greatly missed by the maritime industry stakeholders. I mourn this industry icon with much pains, yet the Will of God for His creature shall prevail at all times. May his soul find mercy and rest with the Almighty God. Amen”.
