In a bid to ensure safety of passengers, the federal government has said that surveillance systems would be deployed to monitor the rail transport services.
The Minister of Transportation, Engr. Mu’azu Jaji Sambo who disclosed this on Wednesday said specifically that the surveillance systems would be used to monitor rail tracks.
Sambo explained that this was considering the earlier attacks on passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna train service by terrorists.
The Minister said it will be insensitive to resume the Abuja-Kaduna train service with abducted passengers still in captivity.
Sambo spoke when he briefed the State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said, “If I give a timeline, I’ll be lying to you. It will be insensitive to restart the service if some families weep day and night over their family members still in the bush.”

He said the federal government was still considering the best options as far as surveillance was concerned in terms of concessioning under public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.
He said the government was mindful of the cost of the project but added that this should be clear in the next one month.
Sambo also disclosed that FEC approved a contract for the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) worth about N1.49 billion for the repair of cranes.
