Transportation Minister Stresses Urgent Rail Link to Lekki Deep Seaport
The Minister of Transportation, Engr Mu’azu Sambo, on Saturday called on the Nigerian Railway Corporation NPA and Lekki Port to expedite action on linking the Lekki Deep Seaport with rail.
Sambo made the call during a facilitation tour of the seaport.
He noted that the rail link was very important for the success of the deep seaport which is nearing completion.
The Minister had during the event also commended the NPA for providing necessary support which made it possible for the project timelines.
The Managing Director of NPA, Mohammed Bello Koko who said the seaport is close to becoming operational assured that his agency will continue to give necessary support.
The Managing Director Lekki Deep Seaport, Du Ruogang, during the tour said that construction works for phase 1 is 96% completion stage.
He said, “The Lekki Port team together with the Lekki Freeport Terminal (LFT) are working hard to ensure that construction is completed in September 2022 and thereafter port operations will start before the end of this year 2022.”
The seaport has such facilities as super Post-Panamax state-of-the-art Ship to Shore (STS) Cranes; 10 Rubber Tyred Gantries (RTGs), two STS Cranes with 115 packages of accessories and five RTGs with 270 packages of accessories.
According to Ruogang, “the port upon completion will have three container berths, three liquid berths and a storage yard with over 15,000 ground slots terminal designed to support a throughput of 2.7 million TEUs annually, a Dry Bulk Terminal with available quay length of about 300m amongst other distinctive attributes.”
