Customs Seizes N818.1m Worth of Foreign Rice, Other Contraband

The Federal Operation Unit (FOU), Zone A, of the
Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced seizures of rice and other contraband which duty paid value were put at N818.1million.

The Controller of the FOU, Deputy Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, told newsmen that the items were smuggled into the country through the neighbouring Benin Republic.

He said particularly that the items came through Ogun waterways.

Among the seizures which were recorded in the past one month include 16 trucks of foreign parboiled rice, 599 cartons of frozen poultry products, 41,950 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 116.3 kilograms of Indian Hemp; 29 units of motorcycles; 54 cartons of creams and 3,260 pairs of used shoes. cartons of creams and 3,260 pairs of used shoes.

According to Controller, the items were seized from different locations in the South West.

The Unit, the Controller added generated N64.3million from Demand Notices (DN) on goods which were cleared at the ports without payment of accurate duties.

According to him, “Consequent upon painstaking documentary checks on some already released cargoes, duties found to have been underpaid were reviewed and demand notices issued in the sum of N64.3 million were paid as revenue into the Federal Government coffers.”
