The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has promised that it will soon deploy new scanning equipment in container examination at the ports and border stations, assuring that it has capacity to handle as much as 400 containers daily.
The Service made the promise during a stakeholders meeting on Thursday in Lagos.
The Assistant Comptroller General of Customs on Modernisation and ICT, Saidu Galadima, told stakeholders that the Service was now ready to deploy the scanners.
Saidu said the process is beginning with sensitization of stakeholders on the exercise.
He explained that the scanners are being deployed for the purpose of facilitating trade in the ports and border stations.
Saidu said, “The essence behind the new technology is based on trade facilitation. Only compliant traders will celebrate. If you are compliant enough, you won’t have any contact with any Customs officer. Cargoes will be released without anybody needing to go to any Customs office.
He disclosed that the scanning would start as soon as the vessel drops the containers.
According to him, the process would be carried out before the containers are taken to the stacking area for cargo declaration.
The scanning will have to be completed before the agents make their declarations, he said.
He said that the Service has qualified officers that will manage the scanners, but added that there is agreement with manufacturer to have technical personnel to oversee the running of the scanners.
