Freight forwarders have applauded the confirmation of the appointment of Mr Mohammed Bello-Koko as the substantive Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
This was as the Ministerial Investigative Panel of Inquiry set to investigate the former Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman cleared her.
Freight forwarders while reacting to the news of Bello-Koko’s appointment as the substantive Managing Director of the NPA said it was a good development.
Former President of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr Eugene Nweke commended the President for “heeding industry demand and insistence that seasoned industry techocrats and experts be appointed to head critical agencies in the maritime industry”
Nweke added, “It is on this note of thank, that I want to join others in Congratulating Mr Mohammed Bello Koko, as the substantive MD of NPA.
“I strongly believe that, the appointment of head of an agency be effected from within the management cadre, this is much better than the Importation.
“The truth being that, the helm of administration at least knows the workings of both the agency and the industry, wherefore will not require many months to understudy the environment”.
Nweke however said expectations of stakeholders from the new MD was for him to perform with a difference.
“And when and where it matters most we can engage him constructively, knowing he will understand our language easily.
“We also, hope that, he keeps door open, having been fully confirmed.
“We pray that the love and passion for an effective maritime industry outweighs personal interests.
“Wishing Mohammed Bello Koko a success tenure”.
Other freight forwarders said Bello-Koko’s confirmation by the President was the best for the industry for continuity.
Besides, the freight forwarders said the new MD understands the maritime industry, adding that this will help him to perform.
In a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Ministry, Eric Ojiekwe said that Bello-Koko’s appointment was with immediate effect.
Part of the statement reads, “The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko as the substantive Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority.
“Prior to this appointment, Mr Koko was the Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the Authority. This appointment takes immediate effect.”
The 11-panel headed by the Director of Maritime services in the Ministry of Transport, Suleiman Auwalu in its report cleared Miss Usman of any financial improprieties.
Bala Usman was suspended on May 2021 based on recommendation by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
