Reps Committee Explains Why Customs Was Given N3.01trillion Target for 2022
The House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise on Monday set a revenue target of N3.01 trillion for the Nigeria Customs Service for this year.
The committee also approved the sum of N369 billion being the budget for the Service for 2022.
Chairman House Committee on Customs and Excise, Leke Abejide, disclosed this when Comptroller-General of the Service, retired Col . Hameed Ali, appeared before the Committee to defend the budget of the Service for 2022.
The House Committee Chairman however commended the Service for being about to exceed its target of N1.678 trillion last year.
In giving the N3tillion target for the year, the House Committee noted that if the Customs could do so much despite all issues presented last year, it could also perform well this year.
The House had then jerked the target from N1.465 trillion to N1.678 trillion against the protest by the Customs CG who complained about reduction and removal of 35 per cent levy on new automobile, devaluation of the Naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria and COVID-19.
He said that though the CGC doubted being able to meet the target for last year, the Customs still exceeded the target by collecting N2.241 trillion.
He told the CGC, “You have indeed performed well in this area and that is very commendable.”
