Major oil marketers among them MRS, Emadeb/Hyde/AY Maikifi/Brittania-U Consortium, Oando and Duke Oil have been identified as the importers of the adulterated fuel.
The identities of the oil marketers were revealed by the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Kyari said the efforts of the NNPC have been to hold back the the affected fuel some of which came from Antwerp in Belgium.
He also explained that petrol imported into the country does not include test to ascertain the level of methanol content.
Kyari however said that the quality of the products as shown in the certificates issues at port of loading in Belgium showed the fuel was in compliance with Nigerian specification.
Apart from this, he added that GMO, SGS, GeoChem and G&G working as NNPC quality inspectors had carried out test before the products were discharged showing Nigeria’s standard.
He added, “As a standard practice for all PMS import to Nigeria, the cargoes were equally certified by inspection agent appointed by the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has met Nigerian specification.
“It is important to note that the usual quality inspection protocol employed in both the load port in Belgium and our discharge ports in Nigeria do not include the test for per cent of methanol content and therefore the additive was not detected by our quality inspectors” .
