President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday expressed anger over the importation of adulterated fuel into the country, one of the reasons why there has been increasing queues as authorities move to recall the product.
Buhari is said to have ordered that the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Mr. Farouk Ahmed, be queried over the development.
This was as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has recalled the adulterated fuel in circulation.
In a statement the NNPC said the adulterated fuel has been isolated.
The Corporation has also increased supply of products to check increasing scarcity.
Part of the statement on Tuesday read, “To ensure vehicular and equipment safety, the limited quantity of the impacted product has been isolated and withdrawn from the market, including the loaded trucks in transit
“Our technical team in conjunction with the NNPC Limited and other industry stakeholders, will continue to monitor and ensure quality petroleum products are adequately supplied and distributed nationwide.
“The source supplier has been identified and further commercial and appropriate actions shall be taken by the authority and the NNPC Limited. The NNPC Limited and all oil marketing companies have been directed to sustain sufficient distribution of petrol in all retail outlets nationwide.”
As at Tuesday, the NMDPRA was considering returning the adulterated fuel back to the supplier.
Meanwhile, there was queue in many filling stations with many of them hoarding the product.
In Ejigbo and Idimu area of Lagos many of the filling stations that had fuel simply took a decision not to open for sales.
Others who managed to open were dispensing with one pump a development which led to long queue.
Some filling stations had to increase the pump price from N162 per litre to N165 per litre.
In black market, fuel was selling for N250 per litre as at Tuesday.
