Tenure Elongation Gossip is Coming from Detractors, Expelled Members, Our Administration Will Elapse April 2023, Says ANLCA President
By Francis Ugwoke
The President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Iju Tony Nwabunike weekend made it clear that there is nothing like tenure elongation as far as his administration is concerned.
Nwabunike who briefed newsmen shortly after the National Executive Council (NEC) of the association said that the tenure of the present executive will elapse on April 2023.
He said that those peddling the rumour of tenure elongation were detractors and those who were expelled from the association as a way of seeking relevance from the media.
Nwabunike said, “let me use this opportunity to once again address a deliberate falsehood being peddled about tenure elongation. There is no tenure elongation in our association.
“Our association at a duly constituted General Meeting in Owerri, Imo State amended the constitution where a single tenure of five years was adopted. This single tenure of five years starts with my administration . Personally , I must say that it disenfranchised me from having a second term but I am abiding by it because that is the new rule. Accepting the bitter pill is also a personal sacrifice because we must separate leadership from selfishness”.
The ANLCA President described the rumour for tenure elongation as simply mischievous .
“It is height of mischief for persons who have been expelled or suspended to be interpreting an outdated constitution to the public with the aim of causing confusion or seeking relevance in the media. For clarity purpose, our administration will elapse in April 2023.
On expelled members, he said the association was open reconsidering its decision for those who show genuine remorse and repentance by granting them a sort of amnesty and re-admitting them.
But he gave condition that the association can only do this if it sees true change in behaviour and resolve on their part to obey constituted authority of the association.
“You may recall that in the past, they sponsored fake stories about us, orchestrated physical attacks at us and attempted to illegally invade this national secretariat. All these attempts failed by the grace of God.
“I hereby call them to true change of heart and character for them to deploy their energies to productive usage and enjoy peace of mind”.
It would be recalled that the camp of the estranged Board led by Managing Director of Pyramid Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha, which has been on warpath with the national executive was said to have requested for reconciliation with the executive of the association.
A letter for reconciliation was said to have been written by Prince Taiye Oyeniyi, the scribe of the estranged board.
Nwabunike acknowledged that the association was with the letter.
It was gathered that the conditions given by Oyeniyi’s camp for reconciliation were such that the move will fail.
Among the conditions were for some chapter elections to be quashed, a development considered by the executive members as outrageous coming from expelled members.
It was gathered that due to the conditions in the letter, members had dismissed it and insisted that the association cannot be discussing with expelled members.
However, when pressed by newsmen on the way forward, the President, Nwabunike said his executive has only one year to stay in office.
Yet, he said if the expelled members were genuine on coming back to the association, it will take some processes.
According to him, the executive was open to peaceful resolution as well as on ground to defend its territory.
