The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said it is not true that about 40 percent of the chemicals banned in Europe find their way into Nigerian markets.
The items were particularly identified as pesticide products which are restricted in Europe but pushed to Nigeria.
In a statement by the Resident Media Consultant, Mr. Sayo Akintola, the agency claimed it has in place stringent requirement for pesticides which are being imported into Nigeria.
The statement added that such goods pass through its current Free Sale Certificate authenticated by the Nigerian Embassies in each European country.
The Director General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, according to the statement had cleared the air at the weekend during a two-day NAFDAC top management committee (TMC) meeting in Lagos held weekend.

Part of the statement reads, “NAFDAC (Nigeria) is a signatory to the international Convention that banned chemicals and pesticides such as the Rotterdam Convention, an international treaty designed to facilitate informed decision-making by countries with regard to trade in hazardous chemicals and Pesticides. Chemicals banned by international convention have been phased out and never entertained for registration or given import permits as raw materials for production.”
