Nigeria on Friday lost again her bid to gain Category C seat in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council.
The loss is the fourth time the country since 2011.
This was as IMO elected 40 member countries into the council for the 2022-2023 biennium,
Nigeria which was once on the category C seat had contested in 2011, 2017, 2019 and this year but lost all.
Among the countries elected into the Category C seat were Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, the Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey and Vanuatu.
Countries that won the Category A seat were China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Panama, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Others that won the Category B seat were 10 countries believed to have “the largest interest in international seaborne trade”
Nigeria’s loss of the election has been attributed to the failure of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in addressing poor operational procedures that had earlier been identified by the IMO audit committee.
Informed stakeholders said it was because the issues raised during the IMO audit were not properly addressed.
