Buhari Commissions Locally Made Boats, Helicopters to Boost Security on Waterways
Some locally made boats and a helicopter were on Thursday commissioned by President Muhammed Buhari to wage war against piracy and other armed attacks on waterways.
The boats were made by the officers and men of the Nigerian Navy.
One of the boats, NNS Oji was built by Nigerian Navy engineers at the Naval Dockyard Limited.
It would be recalled that the Navy had in 2016 also built NNS Adoni and NNS Karaduwa.
In addition, the President commissioned six new ships identified as NNS Lana, Kano, Ikenne, Aba, Sokoto and Osun, 111 boats and one helicopter which would be deployed in the fight against maritime crime.
In his speech, Buhari called on the Naval personnel to ensure judicious use of the boats and vessels.
At the event which included the keel-laying ceremony for Boat-IV and Boat-V construction, he expressed optimism that the new inductions would boost the capability of the Navy in fight against maritime crime.
In his speech, the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, assured that the commissioning of NNS OJI was part of the efforts of the federal government to have a well-equipped navy that can make Nigeria proud.
He added, “these efforts are geared towards enhancing the performance of our constitutional role regarding hydrographic survey and policing of our waters|”.
