Port Anchorage: Nigeria Recorded 27 Attacks on Ships in Q3, Says NIMASA DG
There were 27 armed attacks and piracy on ships at port anchorage in various ports in the country in the third quarter of the year, the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh has said.
Jamoh who disclosed on the occasion of the International Maritime Week 2021 under the theme: ‘Seafarers and Maritime Capacity at the Core of Africa’s Shipping Future’, expressed the impact of such attacks has been very devastating to seafarers.
Jamoh had during the roundtable discussion on the topic, “Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea” said his agency would be holding a meeting with the Inspector General of Police where the issue of the performance of the marine police would be discussed.
He said this was to ensure more efforts on ground to support the Navy.
Jamoh however said that there has been decline in piracy attacks in the Gulf of Guinea.
According to him the region recorded 28 incidents of piracy and armed robbery in the first nine months of 2021, when compared to 46 during the same period in 2020.
He also added that crew kidnappings in the region have dropped with only one crew member kidnapped in Q3 2021, compared to 31 crew members taken in five separate incidents during Q3 2020.
He was quoted saying, “It impacted the seafarers and shipping economically such as loss of revenue due to illegal activities, high insurance premium, a threat to commerce; socially such as arm and drug smuggling, kidnapping, restiveness and others”.
