The world’s largest cruise ship was delivered to Royal Caribbean and the vessel departed from the shipyard on November 5th.
This newest addition to Royal Caribbean’s fleet, named WONDER OF THE SEAS is set to begin its service in March 2022, from Florida, reports FleetMon online..
The behemoth is at 236,857 gross tons, measures 1,188 feet in length, and can house 6,988 passengers in addition to 2300 crew members. Despite its gigantic size, special care has been taken to make it cozy and unintimidating. The design team has taken measures to make the ship appear smaller than it is to its passengers. Matthew Colette, Assistant professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, University of Michigan said that this is done to prevent passengers from feeling as though they were simply a commodity. Such a feat is achieved by dividing the ship into various zones. This particular ship will have zones for entertainment, accommodations, dining, and a special zone for suite passengers furnished with a lounge, restaurant, and private outdoor deck space.
The WONDER OF THE SEAS is the 5th in Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class, the largest so far. There is another vessel of this class that is set to enter service in 2024 whose details are yet to be announced. However, it is safe to assume that any other ship is unlikely to challenge The Wonder of the Sea’s status anytime soon. The fervor of cruise lines for larger ships has cooled down significantly since the coronavirus pandemic upended the demand for cruises, with Royal Caribbean itself canceling negotiations for a 7th ship in the Oasis-class that was to be delivered in 2026…reports FleetMon online.
