FG Removes Import Duty on Nigerian Owned Vessels
*As NSC boss calls for debate on harnessing potentials of maritime industry

As a way of encouraging indigenous shipping development, the federal government has removed import duty on vessels acquired by Nigerians.
The new policy measure was disclosed during this year’s. maiden edition of the Nigeria International Maritime Summit (NIMS) held in Lagos by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh.
The DG who represented the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, said the agency has received the approval in respect of zero duty for vessels imported by Nigerians.
Jamoh added that the letter was sent to the Permanent Secretary of the Transport Ministry, adding however that it was left for the Minister to make the announcement officially.
The DG called on the stakeholders in the sector to be more united to be able to address issues of common interest and beneficial to the nation.
According to him, the sector would not record the much desired progress without security, adding that the agency has been in the forefront of doing everything to sustain the effort on achieving security on the waterways.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Mr Emmanuel Jime during the summit said the maritime industry has a lot of potentials.
Jime said there was the need for a debate on how the potentials of the maritime industry can be harnessed.
