Southern Governors Meet, Unite to Collect VAT
Governors from the Southern states met in Enugu on Thursday and resolved to collect the Value Added Tax (VAT).
The decision was in support of Rivers and Lagos states which have started a process to collect VAT in their territories.
It was also gathered that Ogun State has also started the process of collecting VAT.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), after the meeting of the governors said, “The meeting resolved to support the position that the collection of VAT falls within the powers of the states.”
The forum urged states that were yet to begin the process for the collection of VAT to do so as soon as possible.
It would be recalled that the federal government and the states, particularly Rivers and Lagos, have been at loggerhead on the collection of VAT.
Many Nigerians have expressed their support for the collection of VAT by states.
