Amaechi Says NIMASA Not a Revenue Generating Agency
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is not a revenue generation organization.
Amaechi in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Eric Ojiekwe, explained that the apex maritime agency’s statutory responsibility is simply to regulate the maritime safety and security in the country.
The statement disclosed that the Transport Minister made the clarification during the 5-day National Council on Transportation (NCT) which ended last Friday in Kano state.
Part of the statement reads, “People put NIMASA under pressure that they must make money. Make money for what? NIMASA actually is a regulatory authority, not for them to go and look for money.
“The people that should be making money and they must hear it now is the Nigerian Ports Authority. It is their responsibility to make money.
”NIMASA should therefore focus on being a regulatory authority on issues of safety and security of our waterways.”
Amaechi also during the event said the failure to convene the NCT was as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the effect on the economy.
He assured that the decision reached during the summit would be looked into.
He described transportation as essential to sustainable development, adding that it enables access to employment, business, education, health services and social interactions.
He said, ”The prosperity and wellbeing of developing and developed world are inseparably linked to transport.
”As such, President Muhammadu Buhari has made issues relating to transportation, one of the topmost priorities of his administration.”
