‘CRFFN Registrar is Right to Demand Return of Official Vehicles Allocated to Ex-Board Members’
A freight forwarder, Chidi Opara, has said that the demand by the Regulation of Freight Forwarding In Nigeria (CRFFN) that the official vehicles allocated to the former Committee heads of the Governing Board of the Council be returned was right.
Opara argued that in the first place, the vehicles were allocated to the CRFFN board members even though their functions were part time.
In a statement, Opara said, “At the expiration of the two-year tenure of the Governing Council Board Members, some of the elected members refused to leave office, insisting that they were elected on a four-year tenure. Some of them eventually approached the court for the interpretation of the section of the CRFFN establishment act as it concerns the tenure of elected members of the Governing Council Board.
“A Federal High Court in Abuja pronounced judgement on the matter to the effect that the plaintiffs were elected on a two-year tenure, meaning that their tenure had expired.
“Based on this judgement, the CRFFN Registrar, according to news media reports, wrote to the erstwhile members in possession of the Council’s official vehicles to return them.
“On receipt of the letters, the affected persons, according to news media reports, refused to surrender the official cars in their possession, advancing a very preposterous viewpoint that the CRFFN Registrar is not competent to write such letters.
“The competence of the CRFFN Registrar to write and demand for the return of the property of the Council in the possession of any ex officers of the Council’s management or Governing Council Board should not be in doubt, except in a situation of deliberate mischief.
“Firstly, the Registrar, by the provision of the CRFFN establishment act is the Secretary of the Governing Council Board.
“Secondly, the Registrar is the head of the CRFFN management and the procurement, release, maintenance and retrieval of the Council’s property, fall within the purview of the Registrar’s duties”.
