GoG: US Warship Arrives Lagos for Anti-piracy Operations
A warship owned by the United States of America dedicated for the fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) weekend arrived Lagos.
The ship which is known as USS Hershel “Woody” Williams, according to the U.S. Consul General in Lagos, Claire Pierange, has been assigned to Africa to support in the fight against piracy in GoG.
Pierangelo also told newsmen on Saturday that countries in West Africa lose as much as about 800,000 tons of fish annually, which is worth almost $2 billion in gross revenue as a result of illegal operations by both foreign and domestic vessels.
The captain of the ship, Chad Graham, said the crew will work and train with the Nigerian Navy on anti-piracy, tactics, techniques, and procedures.
Piracy in the GoG has given Nigeria and other West African countries concerns because of the imposition of war risk charges on goods by conference liners.
Some of the liners have had to recruit special armed guards while bringing goods to West Africa because of the issue piracy.
