FEC Approves $11.174bn for Lagos-Calabar Coastal Rail Construction
*Approves $1.484 billion for rehabilitation of Warri, Kaduna refineries
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the sum of $11.174 billion for the Lagos-Calabar standard-gauge coastal railway construction.
This was disclosed to newsmen by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who said the approval was in ratification of President Muhammadu Buhari’s earlier approval for the award of the contract.
The Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed explained that the project was old and inherited from the last administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Mohammed described the project as very important as it will link all the coastal states.
He told newsmen, “This particular route is very important because after the Lagos-Kano route, this Lagos-Calabar coastal route, actually will link all the coastal cities in the country.
“The proposed route alignment is to go from Lagos to Shagamu, Shagamu to Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Ode to Ore, Ore to Benin City, Benin to Sapele, Sapele to Warri, Warri to Yenagoa, Yenagoa to Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt to Aba, Aba to Uyo, Uyo to Calabar, Calabar to Akamkpa to Ikom, to Obudu Ranch, with a branch line from Benin City to Asaba, Onitsha Bridge and then Port Harcourt to Onne Deep Seaport.”
The FEC also approved the rehabilitation of Warri and Kaduna refineries at the cost of $1.484 billion
The Minister of Petroleum, Mr Timpire Sylva, who disclosed this said the contract was awarded to Messers Saipem SPA and Saipem Contracting Limited.
A breakdown showed that $897,678,800 is for the repair Warri refinery and $586,902,256 for Kaduna refinery.
