Customs FOU Seizes N3.3bn Goods in One Month
Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Ikeja, seized N3.3billion worth of goods in the month of June, the Comptroller, Usman Bello Yahaya, has said.
Yahaya who briefed newsmen said the seized items came into the country through unapproved routes.
The seized items were identified as 14,789 bags of 59kg rice, 727 cartons of unregistered drugs, 2,784 cartons of frozen poultry products, 28 units of smuggled used vehicles, 116,000 litres of petrol (4649 jerricans) and 237 bales of second-hand clothes.
Others according to the Comptroller include six sacks of secondhand clothing, 20 cartons of Tramadol, 885 prices of used tyres, 10,400 cartons of alcohol beverages, 84 different kinds of vehicles laden with 50kg bags of rice and five containers of semi-processed woods.
The Comptroller put the value of the 28 seized cars at t N258.61 million.
Yahaya told newsmen that 23 suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures, . adding that 12 of them have secured administrative bail, while 11 are still in custtoms custody.
Among the suspects were two who attempted to smuggle in Indian hemp.
The Controller said his officers have been having confrontation with smugglers in volatile areas of Oyo and Idiroko axis, where he said smuggling is considered a legitimate business.
He however warned that those who failed to turn new leaf would be made to face the wrath of the law.
