The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Mr. Joseph Ityav, has expressed concerns on the poor condition of boats and regulation which according to him killed 350 people in riverine areas in Niger state in one year.
Speaking during the cutting of tree logs and removal of debirs from the Shiroro and Kainji lakes at Malele town in the Borgu Local Government, Ityav identified other causes of the boat mishaps as overloading and failure to use life jackets.
He said the project is being carried out by HYPPADEC and the National Inland Water Ways Corporation of Nigeria, adding that it was aimed at alleviating the hardship and risk the people of the area have been facing travelling in riverine areas.
He advised the people of the area to stop constructing on the banks of the rivers because of the menace of flood.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, commended the two organisations for the project and urged them to ensure monitoring and evaluation of cases of accidents.
Mustapha who was represented by Alhaji Umar Musa Gulani, also said the federal government was concerned about such accidents in riverine areas and would want an end to it.
