Senate Amends Firearms Law, Importer of Illegal Firearms to Pay N1m Fine
The Senate Wednesday amended the firearms Act introducing a fine of N1million against importers involved in the importation of illegal firearms.
It was known as Firearms Act 2004(Amendment) Bill 2021.
Under the extant Act, the fine was N1,000.
The passage of the bill followed its consideration of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
Under Section 35 of the new Act, anyone who fails to surrender illegal arms will pay a fine of N3m or three years imprisonment or both.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who is the Chairman of the Committee explained that the initial N1,000 fine for illegal arms was not enough to stop illegal importation of firearms.
