Lagos Plans Ban on Okada, Tricycles to Check Insecurity

The Lagos State Government Monday hinted of plans to ban commercial motorcycles and tricycles being used for commercial transportation in the stae.
The decision according to the state government is to check issues of insecurity in the state.
The plan is contained in a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who attended the meeting expressed concern that the state has suffered lawlessness in terms of confrontation between law enforcement agents and the commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists.
The Governor said what has been witnessed required urgent attention to ensure security in the state.
He said, “Based on all that we have seen and experienced in the past couple of weeks, as well as the increasing threat posed by the activities of commercial motorcycle operators to the safety and security of lives, we will be announcing further changes to the parameters of motorcycle and tricycle operations in the state in the coming days. No society can make progress amid such a haughty display of lawlessness and criminality”.
The State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu had during the meeting said the Police recorded 218 criminal cases out of the 320 commercial motorcycles that were impounded by the Police between January and this month.
He also said that of the 385 avoidable fatal accidents in Lagos, 85 percent were on motorcycles.

The stakeholders adopted a 12 point resolution which include a ban on commercial motorcycles as a means of transportation.
Among those who attended the meetint were the Spealer of the House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa and the Chief Judge of Lagos, Kazeem Alogba.
