The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Tuesday gave bankers June 1, 2021 deadline to declare their assets.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, the Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, said this was to check bankers in their roles of keeping funds acquired illegally.
Bawa said his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari was to inform him about plans to check financial crimes.
He told State House Correspondents, “Let me just put this, we understood that at the tail end of every financial crime is for the criminal to have access to the funds that he or she has illegitimately gotten and we’re worried about the roles of financial institutions.
“And we have discussed, but we hope that all financial institutions, particularly the bankers, will declare their assets as provided for by the law, in accordance with the Bank Employees Declaration of Assets Act.
“And that the EFCC, come the 1st of June 2021, will be demanding these asset declaration forms, filled by the bankers so that the line that we have drawn from the 1st of June is really complied with by bankers in particular.”
Bama also disclosed that the Commission has arrested 300 internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys between February and March this year.
He warned that the Commission will continue to bring to book those who chose cybercrime activities as means of livelihood.
