One Dead, as Customs, Rice Smugglers Clash

A clash between officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and rice smugglers have left one person dead at Ogun State.
The incident occurred at Sagamu Interchange/Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State.
An eye witness account said no fewer than seven persons were injured following the incdient.
It was gathered that three customs officers and a soldier also sustained injuries during the clash.
An eye witness account said some smugglers with rice had ran into the operatives of the Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, Lagos who stopped them.
Our source said that followign this, some hoodlums working with the smugglers had resisted the customs operatives in what led to exchange of fire.

It was during this one person died in the gun fight, while some sustained injuries.
The customs spokesman for the FOU, Ikeja, Theophilus Duniya, could not be reached on phone, but an officer who confirmed the incident described it as a mob attack on the customs officers for doing their job.
Following the incident, rice traders had organised a protest to the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The traders had called on the state government to check such attacks from the customs.
