Miyetti Allah, Governors Agree to Ban Open Grazing, Night Herding
Members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) and Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) Monday reached an agreement banning open grazing and night herding in the South West of the country.
Part of the agreement was also to put an end to the use of underage in herding, saying this was inimical to national security.
Both MACBAN and the governors reached the agreement during a meeting held at Akure, Ondo state capital.
Open grazing and night herding have all posed security issues in the South West forcing the Ondo State Governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), to insist that all herders should register or leave the state’s forest within seven days.
However, during the meeting Monday, MACBAN had explained that open grazing and night herding from the North to the South had been the culture of herders.
But in a communique issued at the end of the meeting, both MACBAN and the governors agreed to end free-range gazing and illegal occuption of forest reserves in the state.
The meeting was chaired by the Chairman of NGF, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and attened by the Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Muhammadu Kiruwa.
Others were Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, Osun state governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, Jigawa state governor, Mr. Muhammed Badaru, and Kebbi State governor, Mr. Atiku Bagudu.
Heads of security agencies in the states were also in attendance.
