We Can Tackle Piracy in Nigeria, GoG, Boasts Navy
The Nigerian Navy has said that it has the wherewithal to tackle piracy and other maritime crimes in the nation’s territorial waters and the Gulf of Guinea.
This was disclosed by the Naval Chief of Staff , Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibass on the occasion of this year’s Naval Staff Annual Sea Inspection codenamed Exercise Still Water held in Apapa.
Ibass who was represented by the Chief of Naval Safety and Standard, Rear Admiral Kamalrudeen Lawal, said the training exercise conducted all over the world was aimed at correcting weakness and sustaining strength among officers and men of the Navy..
He added that the training centred on anti-piracy operation, protection of oil and gas facilities, fleet manoeuvres, communication, vessel, board search and seizure and search and rescue.
The training, according to him, has impacted positively on Navy’s operational efficiency of the naval officers, adding that it was conducted by three commands with the Exclusive Economic Zone.
He also added that the exercise to access the operational readiness and combat effectiveness of naval fleet.
Among the facilities used for the training were 12 Nigerian Navy ships and two helicopters, including . NNS Prosperity, NNS OKPABANA and NNS KARADUWA; NNS ANDONI, NNS NGURU, NNS EKULU, NNS OSUN, NNS BOMADI, NNS OSE, NNS DORINA, TUG DOLPHIN RIMA and Tug DOLPHIN Mira.
During the training, there were seven onboard landings with the Nigerian Navy helicopters without hitches, Ibas said.
