Protests Rock Katsina over 333 Missing Pupils Abducted by Bandits
Parents of 333 missing pupils of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State who were kidnapped have protested, asking government to do everything to recover their children.
The protests followed the confirmation by the state governor, Aminu Masari, that 333 of the 839 pupils cannot be accounted for after the attack on the school by the kidnappers.
In the protest were scores of parents who marched from one street to another lamenting the incident.
Reuters reported that the protesters who chanted songs were led by a woman who is a mother to one of the pupils.
Some of the placards read, ‘Government must speak out,’ ‘We want our children back’ and ‘We want security in Kankara.’
The Presidency had however Sunday assured that the children would be rescued as troops were said to have surrounded the kidnappers in their hideout.
Presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu. told the BBC “military commanders on the ground have the coordinates of where they believe the bandits are, and whoever they are holding. They have surrounded all of that area.”
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, had said he was relocating to the town to be part of the efforts to rescue the children.
