Foreign Rice: Officer Abducted as Customs Operatives, Smugglers Clash in Ogun
A customs officer has been abducted during a clash between operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and smugglers at Ogun State.
The smugglers had moved against the customs operatives at Olorunlere village, near Alapoti, Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State for intercepting vehicles loaded with bags of foreign rice.
The Public relations officer of the Ogun Command, Hammed Bukoye Oloyede, in a statement said that the smugglers had shot sporadically to evade arrest as well as take hold of the seized consignments.
He said that the Patrol Panel had in turn called for reinforcement but were overwhelmed before help could arrive.
The team had as a result withdrawn while waiting for arrival of reinforcement.
Oloyede said that military personnel and operatives of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) later came to their rescue.
He disclosed that the official driver of the vehicle, Mr Taiwo J Odeyemi, was discovered to be missing after the attack.
The statement added that the Command has launched investigation with other stakeholders to locate the missing officer.
