Anti-smuggling: Customs Intercepts Nine Trucks of PMS Heading to Benin Republic

No fewer than nine trucks of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) being smuggled out of the country to the neihgbouring Benin Republic have been intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Idiroko border route.
The Customs Controller, Ogun State Command, Mr. Micheal Agbara who disclosd this weekend also said 18 trucks of rice valued at N397million were also intercepted.
Agbara told newsmen during a briefing that the Command seized 86 units of Tokunbo vehicles 1,225 litres of diesel and 75 litres of kerosene.
He added that the seizures were made nothwithstanding the attacks on Customs officers during the EndSARS protest y hoodlums.
He said, “As what seems to be a premeditated action, the said hoodlums/smugglers in large number seized the opportunity of the security challenge which made all security agencies focused on protecting their operatives and facilities at that period embarked on massive smuggling of rice and vehicles for about three days.
“2,947 bags of smuggled rice as well as 1, 875 litres of petrol, 18 units of tokunbo vehicles and 30 Cartons of tomato paste”.
He assured that despite the attack on the personnel of the Service, the “Command will continue to dialogue, engage, sensitize and educate the public on social/economic implication of smuggling as well as performing statutory function of enforcing compliance in line with government fiscal policies”.
