Burning of NPA Headoffice Will Impact Negatively on Seaports, Laments Board Chairman
The arson against the headquarters of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) will impact negatively on the nation’s seaports, the Chairman of the Board of the authority, Chief George Ricketts has said.
Reacting to the burning of the NPA headoffice during the EndSARS protest, Rickets in a statement said this will affect the critical role of the authority in the maritime industry.
According to him, it was wrong to destroy public properties during protest, adding that the ports play important roles in economic development.
The statement reads, “ While the youths have the rights to protest, it has become obvious that the peaceful protest was hijacked by criminal elements. The destruction of a critical facility such as the NPA building will affect the economic activities of the ports. The ports are critical aspect of the nation’s economy.
“We strongly condemn this act of burning of the Marina headquarters of the NPA. The NPA plays a critical role as a Federal Government’s parastatals in the maritime industry.
“The NPA belongs to all Nigerians and as an import-dependent nation, it is the port that feeds the whole nation.
“If they start pulling down critical structures of this nature, where do they expect the government to get the funds to meet their demands?” .
Many have reacting to the burning of the NPA headoffice during the EndSARS protest, condemning the action as uncalled for.
The League of Maritime Editors and Publishers had condemned the fire incident on the headquarters of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) linked to the ongoing ENDSARS protests nationwide.
However, while sympathizing with the authority and the various members of staff whose vehicles were razed down on the enormity of the damage, the League which is a body of maritime journalists, called for a thorough investigation on the cause of the inferno, suspecting that it could have been an insider abuse.
