Transporters Give Notice of 500% Fare Increase, Complain of FG Multiple Taxes, Bad Roads

Angered by multiple taxes imposed on them by the federal and state governments, commercial bus operators have threatened to increase their fares by 500 percent.

The transporters under the aegis of Association of Private Transport Company Owners of Nigeria (APTCON), said the increase could be effected in a matter of weeks.
The association during a general meeting identified multiple federal government taxes which according to them were affecting their operations.
The association’s spokesperson, Mr. Audu Gaddo, said government has been making things difficult for transporters to operate with profit.
Gaddo who spoke to newsmen also cited high exchange rate on bank loans needed to acquire buses as among other reasons for hiking their fares.
He said the issues of multiple taxation were more in Lagos, Abia, Rivers, Imo, Enugu, Kaduna, Delta states and Abuja Municipal Area Council, adding that the effect was becoming unbearable for transporters.
He also added that bad roads and harassment by law enforcement agents on the road as well as insecurity as among the problems being suffered by transporters.
