Buhari Orders CBN Governor Not to Release Forex to Importers of Food, Fertilizer

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday ordered the Central Bank Mr. Godwin Emefiele to stop henceforth from releasing forex to importers of food and fertilizers.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, titled “Don’t give a kobo for food, fertilizers imports, President Buhari directs CBN.”
In the statement, the President said individuals and companies interested in importing food or fertilizers should do so by sourcing for forex on their own.
The directive, Shehu said was given during a meeting of the National Food Security Council held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Part of the statement reads, ‘’From only three operating in the country, we have 33 fertilizer blending plants now working. We will not pay a kobo of our foreign reserves to import fertilizer. We will empower local producers.
“We have a lot of able-bodied young people willing to work and agriculture is the answer. We have a lot to do to support our farmers.’’
During the meeting of the National Food Security Council, the President boasted that his administration has recorded notable achievements in the past five years.
On agriculture, he said the sector has continued to record growth despite the ravaging coronavirus.
